Cleverly done this does work - but only when essential - I prefer to build my own lynx - but some times you need that extra out of network originality.

We can't all listen to google too much - or we will become googlised like george bush.

Ha. I am not a big fan of link buys either - not to say they are never useful- but generally they don't make sense and certainly not overt large blocks of them which always seems to be what small businesses do. #5 is priceless. I see it all the time- crappy site buys links (all to homepage of course) and then they have the audacity to ask what happened.

@ Jack

I am def not saying that:

"Whoever has the most power is the one who's right"

I do not agree with most things Google has done on the paid link front.

I am simply sharing specific elements that make you stand out a lot more, if you are partaking in link purchases.

Bottom line is webmasters need to become less reliant on Google. It is not easy I will admit, but it is much easier in todays market then ever before.

"However, it is their index and they can do what they want." And we can create a PR disaster by calling them hypocrites every step of the way for protecting the 300+ million dollar brand names. Webmasters have more power than they might think on the surface. We have power in numbers.

But if we keep caving in and saying, "They can do whatever they want. Whoever has the most power is the one who's right," we're setting ourselves up for a grim future.

Thanks for this particular post. Buying links is like prostitution. Why buy something you can get for free if you apply yourself?

Dan - Google looks at the number of backlinks a site has as one of the major factors in determining how well they rank for search terms. They see it as a link equals a vote of confidence in that site, so if your site has 1000 backlinks, it means 1000 people are saying your site rocks, so they rank you higher. If you buy 1000 links, then those links aren't really votes of confidence in your site, they're just votes that you've paid for. Google sees it as manipulating their search results, and will try to penalize you if they catch you doing it.

Ok, I am a web developer and not a search marketing person so this may sound a bit noobish. Why does google penalize people for buying text links? Are you talking about the text links from various ad networks. I don't see why people get penalized for this isn't it the same thing that you do when buying content ads from adwords? Are they penalizing you because your not buying them through Google?
